The Lakeland Terrier is a hardy, lively, compact and harmoniously built dog. Its appearance evokes that of the Welsh Terrier. It remains smaller than the latter and can even be mistaken for a scaled-down Airedale Terrier when wearing the same coat.

History of the breed

Originally from Lakeland (or Lake District), the lake region located in the north-west of England , the Lakeland Terrier breed was developed from the 19th century with the successive contributions of several terriers, like the Bedlington Terrier, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Border Terrier, then Fox Terrier and Airedale Terrier. He was appreciated for his enthusiasm and energy during the hunt for pests, but also for foxes. In 1928, the breed   entered the English Kennel Club. The FCI recognized it definitively on October 14, 1954.

The Lakeland Terrier is an alert, energetic dog , always enthusiastic about activity and work. Animated by great vivacity and remarkable assurance, he is nonetheless friendly and cheerful . Gifted at hunting, during which he flaunts all his speed and determination, he is also a very good companion and guard dog (especially alarm dog).

The Lakeland Terrier is a relatively easy dog to train. He likes to please his master and is, moreover, very intelligent. On the other hand, it is recommended to socialize it early enough to avoid aggressive behavior towards other animals, especially smaller ones.

He can adapt to living in an apartment , on condition, however, that he often takes him out and offers him activities that allow him to let off steam. In any case, he will prefer to live in a house with a fenced garden . It adapts to all family situations , to the presence of children and other animals if it has been properly socialized. The Lakeland Terrier needs an active and available master , able at the same time to surround him with tenderness, to impose himself as a pack leader and to offer him enough daily activities.

Ease of gaining weight

It is a rustic and resistant dog. It supports low temperatures and bad weather quite well thanks to its dense coat and double coat. However, he can contract eye conditions or skin problems. Special attention to his eyes and his skin should be paid to him.

The Lakeland Terrier does not molt . Its maintenance is therefore simple, but it must be regular. His hair, skin and eyes should be monitored to prevent disease.

He needs several daily outings to exercise and maintain his balance, especially if he lives in an apartment. This dog cannot stand being inactive for long.

It is recommended to brush the dog on a regular basis to keep its skin and coat clean. His eyes should be inspected and cleaned using clean compresses soaked in physiological serum or a specific eye solution (special for dogs). Don’t forget his fingernails and teeth.
