The 2nd edition of the World Day Against the Abandonment of Pets will take place on June 27th. The objective of this initiative led by Solidarité-Animal is as much to raise public awareness of this tragedy, which is experiencing a peak in the run-up to the holidays, as it is to alert the public authorities.”

On June 29, 2019, the association Solidarité-Animal (formerly Solidarité-Refuges) organized the first World Day Against the Abandonment of Pets. The second edition will be held this year on Saturday, June 27.”

As its name suggests, this initiative aims to combat the abandonment of dogs, cats and other companions by raising public awareness and drawing the attention of the authorities to this scourge, so that they can put in place concrete measures.”

Every year, in fact, about 100,000 animals are abandoned in France, including 60,000 in summer just according to the 30 Million Friends Foundation, partner of the event. The approach of departures on summer holidays constitutes, in fact, a period of peak abandonment. The choice of the date of the World Day Against the Abandonment of Pets is not trivial, since it is the last Saturday of June, coinciding with the weekend before the first wave of Julyists.”

The causes of pet abandonment are multiple, ranging from the death of the owner to financial difficulties and moving, through the departure to a nursing home, the illness or old age of the animal.”

The situation abroad is also evoked by Solidarité-Animal, especially in the United States, Russia or Romania, where euthanasia is practiced on a massive scale.”

The 2nd edition of the World Day Against Animal Abandonment will be sponsored by TV hosts Karine Ferri and Christophe Beaugrand.”

Founded in 2018, Soldarité-Animal connects, via its online platform, people and companies wanting to help shelters and associations with these structures collecting stray or abandoned animals.”
