The Greyhound, or English Greyhound, is a dog with a strong frame and musculature. Harmoniously built, it is based on limbs of great flexibility and gives off an impression of nobility. The Greyhound is clearly cut for speed, reaching up to 70 km / h. It is one of the fastest land animals, behind the cheetah, the springbok or the deer, which revolve around 90 – 100 km / h.

History of the breed

It seems that the deep origins of the Greyhound go back as far as Antiquity, probably in ancient Egypt and Greece a little later. These dogs were subsequently gradually introduced to Europe, but it was in Britain that the Greyhound breed was developed. Extremely efficient runner, he made the most of his speed by chasing the hare during the hunting parties. He then took part in spectacular races in cynodromes and still does today. The breed was officially recognized definitively by the FCI in 1955.

Education

Clever
Obedient

Upbringing the Greyhound is not very difficult due to its gentle character and intelligence . However, it is necessary to show firmness during his training so that he knows the limits not to be exceeded. Be careful never to go for the balance of power, because the Greyhound is very sensitive .

Living conditions

Suitable for apartment living
Good for new masters
Love it hot
Love the cold

Although it is preferable for them to live indoors due to their sensitivity to cold and inclement weather, the Greyhound will always prefer living in a house with a fenced garden to one in an apartment. It gets along quite well with children and other animals if it has been properly socialized. Family life therefore suits him perfectly if he enjoys good conditions.

Health

Solid
Ease of gaining weight

A generally healthy dog, the Greyhound only fears the cold and injuries that can appear during races. His short and fine hair does not protect him sufficiently against low temperatures and bad weather, while his limbs can suffer the effects of too intense efforts when running. His paws should be examined systematically after sprints.

Moulting is practically non-existent in the Greyhound, especially as its coat is short and very thin . It therefore requires little maintenance , but it must remain regular to protect its skin and its health in general, while preserving the beauty of its coat.

It is recommended to brush the dog weekly . Baths are only necessary if they are excessively dirty (traces of mud, etc.).

Food

The diet of the English Greyhound must be adapted to its morphology and its physical activity. He must ingest daily between 400 and 500 grams of pâtés which are accompanied by meat, rice or pasta. If human food fits him like a glove, the Greyhound can also be satisfied with kibble if it is of high quality and meets his needs.
