The Fila Brasileiro is exclusively attached to his family. He doesn’t like strangers. This character trait will have to be softened during an education that is not within the reach of everyone. Far from the idea of having to deal with an untenable dog. But his past as a guard and protection dog makes him very suspicious of intruders and potentially aggressive. With his owner and his adoptive family, he will show unparalleled kindness. The Fila Brasileiro is agile despite his massive physical build. Its gaits are characterized by elongated, supple, almost feline movements. When walking, the head is carried lower than the back line. The trot is smooth and effortless, the canter powerful and the dog is surprisingly fast.

History of the breed

The origin of Fila Brasileiro is quite controversial. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that this Brazilian dog is descended from the mastiffs, whether Mastiffs and mastiffs, but also from the Bloodhound, which gives him an impressive flair. He arrived in Brazil in the 16th century thanks to the Portuguese conquistadors, Dutch, Spanish and African.

The Fila Brasileiro is first used as a guard dog. He was in particular responsible for protecting the herds against wild animals. Then he was used as a guardian of slaves in the sugar cane plantations. Also war dog, the Fila Brasileiro was very popular with the Brazilian police, especially as a tracker.

In the 19th century, after the end of slavery, this canid was crossed with the Spanish greyhound, among others, to make her agility and speed. It was in 1946 that its standard was established by veterinarians Paulo Santos Cruz, Erwin Valdemar Rathsan and João Ebner . The Fédération Cynologique Internationale recognizes race 1 January 1960.
