The touching story of couple adopting dog with the same heart disease as their daughter

A mother in Minnesota was shocked when she learned that the dog she was planning to adopt had the same rare disease as her daughter. This only reinforced her decision to welcome him.

It is always with great emotion that Nicki Mikolai remembers the birth of her daughter Avery 15 years ago and the terrible time that followed.

4 hours after being born, she had to be operated on urgently for a rare heart defect, says KARE 11 . The newborn was in fact suffering from pulmonary stenosis, corresponding to the narrowing of the pulmonary artery which restricts blood flow.

Today, the teenager is leading an almost normal life thanks to the pacemaker implanted in her.

Recently, during confinement, Avery and his mother had set out to find a dog to adopt. While visiting the site of the No Dog Left Behind shelter, located in Brooklyn Center in the State of Minnesota (Northern United States), they came across the photo of Annie , a Pitbull / Siberian Husky cross. Before being taken in, the dog had been abandoned on a Kentucky farm.

Annie presented with a heart murmur and needed a thorough vet exam to identify the cause. Nicki Mikolai offered to act as a foster mom to see if the cohabitation was going to be okay and possibly help her find a new family once she gets better.

The sign that they were meant to meet

The diagnosis was announced a few days after the dog arrived home; Annie suffered from 2 heart problems, one of which was… pulmonary stenosis. Exactly like Avery . Her mother couldn’t believe her ears.

Annie was to receive the same treatment: balloon valvuloplasty. A tiny balloon is inserted into the narrowed artery using a catheter and then inflated to dilate it. The object is then deflated and removed.

The operation took place last month at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Hospital. A few days later, Nicki Mikolai officially adopted her.

Annie is getting better and better and has even started running and playing again. The mother and her daughter are happy to see her so happy and in good shape. For them, if Annie was born with the same disease as Avery , it must have been a sign that they were destined to meet.
