History of the breed

the   Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen descends from large griffins , like many bassets. This breed began to be the subject of extensive selections from the end of the 19th century . We then looked primarily for subjects with straight legs, as recommended by the count of Elva. Paul Dezamy then set about developing the Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen so as to improve his hunting qualities. This dog has thus become more and more versatile and, thanks to its speed, has been used for furry game of various sizes: hare, rabbit, wild boar … Representatives of this breed have also distinguished themselves in several repeated in competitions, such as the European hare cup during its 5th edition. The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen breed was definitively recognized by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) on January 17, 1967.
