History of the breed

If the patronage is attributed to Great Britain, the race of the Tibetan Spaniel finds its origins, as its name suggests, in the mountainous regions of Tibet . The ancestors of the Tibetan Spaniel would have appeared 2 millennia ago , as well as the Lhasa Apso, the Shih Tzu and the Pekingese, among others. This dog has long accompanied Buddhist monks in their temples, warning their masters and their counterparts of defense (mainly Tibetan Mastiffs) of the slightest intrusion.

Even if it bears the name of a spaniel, it has neither the qualities nor the heritage of a hunting dog. He has always served as a companion and alert dog . The first representatives of the breed to be taken to England arrived there towards the end of the 19th century . In the United States, the Tibetan Spaniels began to be adopted during the 1960s and the national club dedicated to the breed was founded in 1971. 13 years later, it obtained recognition by the American Kennel Club. In the meantime, on August 22, 1961, it was the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) which granted it its definitive title.
