History of the breed

The Whippet as we know it appears for the first time in the 19th century. However, his breed was already present long before. Indeed, from the time of the 17th century, it was called Greyhound or Levron. Either way, she descends from a cross between the Greyhound and some terriers like the Fox Terrier and the Bull Terrier . The contribution of the Little Italian Greyhound would also be appropriate.

The breed was not recognized until 1899. From the end of the 19th century , the Whippet took part in rabbit chasing competitions organized for the working class of the North of England , the latter not being able to breed Greyhounds ( reserved for nobles). Its name comes from the exclamation “Wip It”, translate as “Go ahead, go for it”. Expression used by miners in Northern England, in the 19th century, used this race in hunting rabbits and then for dog racing. Indeed, the miners could not afford the English nobility who preferred to breed the Greyhound. The Whippet breed was definitively recognized by the FCI on April 27, 1955 .

Behavior with others

Cohabitation with children
Sociable with other animals
Love strangers

The Whippet is a very popular dog for its great calm and discretion , since it does not bark frequently . He is an extremely easy-going pet, very attached to his master and his family . As a good Greyhound, he is not particularly demonstrative in the emotional sphere. He gets along perfectly with children , even if he is not the most playful of dogs. The Whippet’s favorite activity remains racing , for which it is clearly built. However, like all Greyhounds , he does not necessarily show his great sensitivity .

Education

Clever
Obedient

The Whippet must have an education that is both strict and gentle . She must start as soon as possible and must in particular focus on recall to avoid losing it on walks where her natural instinct will attract her to the game. However, it is a dog that is educated very easily , especially thanks to his intelligence and his desire to please his master . In any case, you should not yell at him, reprimand him maliciously and physically. He is naturally happy and will appreciate the hugs as a thank you.

Living conditions

Suitable for apartment living
Good for new masters
Love it hot
Love the cold

Although greedy for spaces to sprint (it can reach 60 km / h without problem), the Whippet is not just an outdoor dog. His calm and serene temperament makes him appreciate life in an apartment or at least indoors. He will be very happy lying on a sofa or at his foot. Above all, he does not bark and will not disturb the neighborhood in any way. He just needs to be able to run at least once a day, so he’ll need to be out and do dog sports. It is important for his mental and physical health , as well as for his well-being.

Health

Solid
Ease of gaining weight

The Whippet is blessed with very solid health . Like many short-haired dogs, he is especially afraid of bad weather and cold . In winter, it will be necessary not to take it out when the conditions are extreme. Then, he can develop some muscle, ligament and arthritis problems due to his passion during each race. Do not hesitate to contact a veterinarian to perform regular examinations and, thus, ensure its good growth.

Ease of grooming

The Whippet’s moults are not very important. He loses little hair. This does not add additional work to a very simple maintenance because of its short and fine coat. Her dress can be polished with a chamois leather .

The Whippet is often described as a clean dog , and rightly so. Brushing is done from time to time with a glove and the ears should be inspected at least once a week. The cleaning of the latter is to be done using a cotton ball soaked in a little sweet almond oil , but never with a cotton swab.
