History of the breed

Probably descending from an ancient pointer breed of Spanish origin and which would have been established in England in the Middle Ages , the breed of the English Setter will be established only around the middle of the 19th century. Edward Laverack, considered the founder of the breed. He fixed the breed in England around 1860 by focusing his work on aesthetics and his work, in order to make an exceptional working dog.

Today, the English Setter is the most common pointing dog in France. The English Serrer has great hunting qualities. He is considered to be one of the best pointing dogs, or at least one of the most used. The breed standard was established in 2009.

Education

The English Setter can be educated quite easily . We must use the method of positive reinforcement, with almost no punishments. As with all dogs, it is best to start training as early as possible, being firm, strict but also gentle . The Setter is very sensitive. His intelligence allows him not to be complicated to train. The recall is one of the orders to be taught first, because his desires for the hunt can sometimes make him deviate from its trajectory and cause some unexpected outings.

The English Setter is both affectionate and very active. If he prefers to evolve over large expanses in rural areas , he can quite adapt to urban life, provided he offers enough opportunities to exercise. Once inside the house, he appreciates being in peace, lying down next to his master and thus resting. He doesn’t like loneliness.

The English Setter never balks at the effort and goes all out when taken for walks or hunting. It therefore tends to get dirty and leave parasites and plants on its coat. It is also recommended to have him take a bath when he has dived in a lake or swampy water. His ears should be cleaned regularly to avoid any infections and ear infections that he tends to develop.

Regular and meticulous brushing allows the English Setter to keep a healthy coat and stay healthy once or twice a week , and daily during the moult. Its hair must be the subject of special care during the moulting period. 2 to 4 annual groomings are necessary with, possibly, occasional visits to the professional groomer to detangle and cut his fringes.

Food

A diet based on high quality kibble will do the trick for this dog who has a strong need for protein for his daily expenses. Moreover, if his owner prefers to replace the daily 500 grams to be swallowed by human food , there is no problem. Meat (about 350 grams), starches and fresh vegetables suit him perfectly.
