History of the breed

The Sealyham Terrier breed originates from Great Britain , specifically Wales. It is, in fact, in a Pembrokeshire castle, called Sealyham Mansion or Sealyham House , that the first breeding is located.

In the mid-1800s, former army officer John Owen Tucker-Edwardes was raising Otterhounds for otter hunting on the banks of the Sealy River, while developing a line of stocky, determined and energetic terrier dogs. His Sealyham Terriers were smaller and more fiery than those we see today.

The Sealyham Terrier experienced its golden age in the interwar years. The breed has been awarded 3 times at the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show . One of its most famous representatives was named Bootlegger and had lived during Prohibition. World famous actors such as Humphrey Bogart , Gary Cooper and Cary Grant were among the known owners of Sealyham Terriers and contributed to their popularity.

His long, dense and double coat requires regular care , although his hair loss during seasonal shedding is not particularly excessive. Overall, the maintenance of the Sealyham Terrier does not pose any difficulty , as long as it is provided on a constant basis.

Maintaining the beauty and health of the Sealyham Terrier’s coat and skin requires thorough brushing every 2-3 days to prevent tangles. Particular attention should be paid to the facial fringes , where secretions and debris can accumulate. The inside of his ears also calls for frequent inspections and cleaning with a suitable lotion.

His teeth need to be brushed frequently to remove tartar build-up and the proliferation of bacteria. Finally, if they do not wear out naturally, its claws need to be cut. If you are new to this, it is recommended that you seek advice from a veterinarian or groomer.

Food

The diet of the Sealyham Terrier does not differ significantly from that of most of its counterparts from other breeds. It must simply be of high quality (premium kibble or balanced homemade meals), adapted to the specific characteristics of the dog (age, state of health, activity, etc.) and given in reasonable portions to avoid overweight.
