History of the breed

The French Spaniel descends from the dogs of Oysel around which part of the work of Gaston Phébus is centered. The breed was very successful in the Middle Ages. His performance as a pointer quickly allowed him to shine. Over the centuries, other more swift varieties have been preferred, such as the English Setter. Close to decline, the French Spaniel owes its durability to the work of enthusiasts such as James de Connick, who established the first standard in 1891. The Club de l’Epagneul Français was founded in 1906, when the breed was definitively recognized by the FCI in June 1955.

Physical features

Its coat: flat, silky and dense. Slightly wavy behind the neck, above the tail attachment and over the ears. Short and thin on the head but longer on the ears.
Its color: white and brown (from cinnamon to dark liver), with regular areas, little or moderately speckled.
His head: proudly wearing, with well-marked reliefs, of medium length and width. The stop is moderately pronounced.
His ears: set back, pulled forward, with more or less long and wavy fringes.
Her eyes: quite large, oval, cinnamon to brown in color in accordance with that of the dress. Sweet and intelligent expression.
His body:   length slightly greater than the height at the withers. The top line is straight, always well supported, the withers are dry and broad; the kidney is broad and muscular, the croup is rounded and harmoniously inclined, the chest burst and the sternal region ample and curved.
Its tail: thick at its base and thinning towards its end. Set below the topline, carried more or less curved, furnished with a long silky and slightly wavy hair.

The French Spaniel is an intelligent, measured and gentle dog. An excellent pointer and retrieval dog, he is naturally gifted at hunting and shows his qualities in this field quite early on. Guarding is not, however, one of its strengths.

Education

The French Spaniel is a dog as easy to train as it is to train . Naturally attentive and hard-working , he quickly learns to optimize his innate qualities as a hunter.
