History of the breed

The Breton Spaniel is, as its name suggests, originally from Brittany, more precisely from its center. If the official creation of the breed dates back to 1907, its history goes back much further. He descends from the dogs of Oysel and was the result of crosses between springers, pointers and setters. If he is considered a pointing dog, he is originally a hunting dog.

The Breton Spaniel has a characteristic of its own. It is sometimes born without a tail (anuran) or with a very short tail (brachyoure). The Fédération Cynologique Internationale recognized the breed on November 19, 1954.

Education

Clever
Obedient

Very intelligent , the Breton Spaniel offers no difficulty in his education. He is very obedient by nature. Despite everything, his education must be taken as soon as possible to avoid some unfortunate drifts. Thus, this hunting dog par excellence must learn not to deviate from its trajectory (during walks) if it smells of game. He should also be gently educated as he is a very sensitive dog. Firmness must be required, otherwise his sometimes stubborn character could make his master see all the colors.

Living conditions

Suitable for apartment living
Good for new masters
Love it hot
Love the cold

The Brittany Spaniel is as sociable with children as it is with adults or other pets. It is not really suitable for apartment living. The Breton Spaniel needs to go out regularly to exercise. A garden in the city or large expanses in the countryside are beneficial to it. Do not forget that he is a hunter at heart and, as such, he must be able to take long walks.

However, he does not accept loneliness and needs to constantly have someone by his side, whether it is human presence or a fellow creature.

Ease of grooming

The Breton Spaniel is a very easy to maintain dog. First, it has the advantage of not having a smell that would disturb its owners. Then, it does not need anything to regain its cleanliness after getting dirty during a day of hunting.

He rarely needs a bath. Brushing can be done on a daily basis . For grooming, it is best to do it at home as salons are not experienced with this breed. 10 minutes, 2 to 3 times a year, that is relatively little.

Eyes and ears should be checked weekly to make sure there is no sign of dirt or infection. Brushing your teeth regularly helps eliminate tartar buildup and the growth of bacteria. The nails should be trimmed regularly as well. If you are new to this, it is recommended that you seek advice from a veterinarian.

Thus, the Breton Spaniel will flourish alongside its owner when he accompanies him on his hikes, joggins or bike rides.
