History of the breed

The Poitevin is a dog native to Poitou , as its name suggests. It descends hounds developed and bred from two ancient breeds, the dog and the dog Céris Montemboeuf, by François Marquis Larrye the late 17th century. After suffering a spectacular fall of its workforce, the Poitevin has experienced a revival in the mid-19th century when it was massively used for wolf hunting.
