History of the breed

A breed of French origin , the Poodle descends from the Barbet , from which he inherits the general appearance and ease of hunting in an aquatic environment. The Poodle was indeed used in duck hunting; Etymologically, the words Poodle and Duck also have the same root. The term Poodle was formerly used in the feminine to designate the female of the Barbet. Gradually, he established himself as one of the best companion dogs thanks to his jovial and dynamic character. The breed standard was established in 1936.

Louis XVI also owned a Poodle. He was shaved like a lion. During the Second Empire, the Poodle saw its popularity explode, so much so that it had become the companion dog par excellence.

Education

Clever
Obedient

Endowed with a great intelligence , the Poodle quickly assimilates the rules , the orders and the exercises which are inculcated to him during his education. However, it should not be too firm or violent, because this dog is particularly sensitive, even sensitive. Play is the best way to make them excellent and pleasant companions for adults and children alike. Do not hesitate to reward him for his good deeds and never argue with him during his silliness.

Living conditions

Suitable for apartment living

Urban life is fine for the Poodle, especially with the smaller sized varieties, but he particularly appreciates being able to grow in an outdoor space . If he has adapted very well to a city lifestyle, the large Poodle will always have a preference for large country expanses and land with water points.

A house with a garden will suit him like a glove, since he will alternate between inside and outside, where he can frolic. Apartment life can suit him without worry, as long as he takes him out regularly so that he can spend himself as he should.

Ease of grooming

The Poodle loses little hair , but its thick coat needs to be regularly maintained in order to maintain its beautiful appearance. Inspect its ears regularly to prevent ear infections and prefer kibble to help it fight tartar.

It is recommended to brush it daily using a rubber brush and a metal comb. Visits to the groomer at a bimonthly rate are recommended. The frequency of grooming becomes much more important if you want to get him to participate in contests. In this case, the maintenance budget to be expected increases considerably.
