The Chihuahua is a racy dog of harmonious proportions. Round-headed with a lively expression, the Chihuahua has over time become a very popular dog in Europe and the United States. Considered the smallest purebred dog in the world, he loves to be hugged by his owners and cuddled. He has a very popular temperament. In addition, he is not greedy in maintenance or food, and has good health while his size could lead to believe the opposite.

History of the breed

The Chihuahua is a very old dog breed . It is considered the smallest in the world . Its name simply comes from the largest state in the Republic of Mexico : the state of Chihuahua . He would have lived there in total freedom before being domesticated by the natives at the time of the Toltecs. At the end of the 19th century, this dog is exported in bulk to the United States and Europe follows.

The Chihuahua is bursting with life and energy. His strong temperament and dynamism make him suspicious, even aggressive towards strangers whom he receives with barking supposed to scare them away! This characteristic trait makes the Chihuahua a very good alarm dog . Contrary to popular belief, he is a very active and above all very courageous dog. He will not be impressed by congeners much stronger than him. With his master and his adoptive family, he will be very cuddly , very endearing , gentle and affectionate . He loves to be hugged by his owner. His intelligence is real and allows him in particular to adapt to all environments and situations.

Education

Clever
Obedient

The Chihuahua does not present any difficulty in its education even if it is preferable like any small dog with a strong character to do it from an early age. It is about being firm and it will quickly be clean, faithful and unobtrusive. Very stubborn , he could then be uncontrollable and do as he pleases. Do not spare this canine which will then respond perfectly to orders. It is suggested to socialize him very quickly so that he can be pleasant with intruders and other animals.

Living conditions

Suitable for apartment living
Good for new masters
Love it hot
Love the cold

The Chihuahua is predisposed to live in a house . Apartment life is also ideal for him. However, he often feels the need to spend time outdoors. He likes to let off steam in green spaces.

Health

Ease of gaining weight

With a fragile appearance, the Chihuahua is however robust and enjoys a good life expectancy . It is not at all fragile and can live up to 20 years. He is prone to eye irritation if his eyes are not maintained regularly. Farrowing is sometimes difficult due to its very small size. There are also some congenital heart diseases (pulmonary stenosis or mitral endocardiosis) and neurological (hydrocephalus).   It can sometimes be chilly and should therefore be kept away from drafts and the outdoors in winter.

Ease of grooming

The Chihuahua is a naturally clean little dog that requires little maintenance. It loses small amounts of hair throughout the year, but a little more during shedding in spring and fall.

The long-haired Chihuahua will require more maintenance to avoid knots.

Whether long or short haired, his coat is odorless. It should be brushed regularly – grooming only takes a few minutes each week – since as a companion dog it is part of your privacy. For brushing, you can use a rubber glove or a brush with short, natural bristles. For the long-haired Chihuahua, it is necessary to brush it at least 3 times a week to avoid tangles, with a detangling brush.

It should be washed from time to time with warm water and a mild shampoo. The ears and eyes should be checked regularly for the slightest trace of dirt or infection. The nails are to be cut if they become too long. If you are new to this, it is best to seek advice from a veterinarian. Brushing the dog’s teeth also helps remove tartar buildup and bacteria growth.
