English Pointer

The English Pointer is both a pointing dog and a hunting dog. He excels in that of the hare. As a family, he wants to be gentle, delicate and attentive. He is also very loyal to a master whom he likes to follow everywhere, even if he is also independent. It should not be adopted to lie down all day. This canine needs regular and intense physical activity in order to be happy. Its education is easy and its maintenance without constraint.

History of the breed

The origin of the English Pointer is certain and it enjoys great popularity around the world. This dog therefore finds its past in Portugal, even if some claim that it would be the descendant of the Italian Shorthaired Pointer. In reality, therefore, it comes from the perdigueiro portugues (a Portuguese Pointer) which has many common characteristics. The latter was characterized by his speed, his endurance and his way of pointing the game while keeping the nose high.

the English Pointer is an easy-care dog. However, his great enthusiasm while hunting and the fact that he does not mind venturing into the dirtiest terrain always makes it necessary to examine and clean him after every outing. His ears should also be inspected regularly to prevent inflammation.

It is recommended to brush the dog every week to avoid deposits of dirt (vegetation debris, etc.) and to ensure the absence of external parasites. It is essential to check the condition of his eyes and ears to prevent a parasite from slipping into them and promoting the appearance of infections.
