Gracie, the Border Collie who keeps wildlife and visitors safe in a national park

The staff of Glacier National Park (Montana, United States), in 2016 integrated a special member of their team: Gracie. The bitch, brave and intelligent, watches over wild animals and visitors.

5 years ago, staff discovered a security issue in the park. Wildlife, especially mountain goats and bighorn sheep, roamed near roads and parking lots.

To overcome this problem, Mark Biel , director of the natural resources program, had the idea of bringing in a herding dog, in order to safely remove wildlife from areas at risk. He offered his own Border Collie to perform this mission. After 10 weeks of training, Gracie was ready for her new job.

An intelligent, courageous and conscientious dog

The 7-year-old Gracie is portrayed by Mark Biel as an eager to please and incredibly intelligent dog. She is also energetic and focused with each task at hand. And these are far from being his only skills.

Over time, Gracie has become an essential member of the park team. His colleagues, as much as his owner, are proud of his accomplishment. They know they can count on it under any circumstance. And vice versa. </p
