History of the breed

The Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier originates, as its name suggests, from the Glen of Imaal , a vast mountainous region in eastern Ireland. He was raised by local farmers who exploited the land in the many valleys of the region, especially from the 17th century. So he had to adapt to the harsh conditions and the demands of the job , which he has done brilliantly over the generations.

Physical features

His coat: medium length and rough in appearance. The outer coat is associated with a softer undercoat.
Its color: either blue brindle (without tending towards black), or wheat (light to golden tending towards red).
Its head: quite long, broad and powerful. The stop is marked, the nose is black, the muzzle strong and tapering towards its extremity, the jaws strong and articulated in scissors.
Its ears: relatively small, carried backwards at rest, but semi-erect when the dog is active.
His eyes: wide apart, medium size, brown in color and round in shape.
His body: long and well let down. The neck is muscular and moderately long, the top line straight, the kidney strong, the chest large and powerful, the ribs well sprung.
Its tail: thick at its base, attached and carried happily.
