History of the breed

The ancestors of the Portuguese Podengo would have been brought, during Antiquity, by the Phoenicians and the Romans on the Iberian Peninsula . The breed has gradually adapted to local specificities to approach its current standards. The variety of small Podengo Portuguese was developed from the 15th century, mainly by Portuguese sailors who sought easy hunting partner to carry.

Physical features

His hair: either short and smooth, or long and hard. In all cases, it is moderately thick and devoid of undercoat. Presence of beard in the wire-haired variety.

The muzzle is pointed, the nose of a darker color than that of the coat, the muzzle pointed and shorter than the skull, the jaws articulated in scissors and the cheeks dry and oblique.
His ears: erect, very lively, set obliquely and at the level of the line of the eyes. Carried vertically or a little forward when the dog is in action.
His eyes: small, obliquely placed, honey to brown in color depending on the hair color, displaying a lively look.
Its body: well proportioned, slightly longer than high (height at the withers) especially in the small variety. The neck is straight, long and strong, the top line horizontal, the withers very slightly marked, the back straight and long, the loins wide and muscular, the croup straight or slightly sloping, the chest well let down to the elbows and Moderately broad, the belly slightly raised and the sides dry.
Its tail: of medium length, thick at its attachment and tapering towards its end to end in a point. Drooping and slightly bent at rest, raised horizontally or carried like a sickle when the dog is in action.
