Brexit: How to travel to the UK with your pet from January 1?

The final phase of the process of Britain’s exit from the European Union will be completed in two weeks. From that date there will be a change for UK pet owners who want to take pets to the EU, but also to Northern Ireland. What will happen to European masters who want to come to the UK with their 4-legged companions?

Entered into force in January, the Brexit see its transition period to end on 1 January 2021 and further restrictions will be applied once. They concern in particular the movement of British pets in the European Union .

However, for owners of EU dogs , cats and ferrets who plan to travel to the UK with their pets, there will be no immediate changes.

As of next month, therefore, owners who reside in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland will no longer use the European passport to enter their animals into the EU. They must be provided with a certificate of good health issued by a veterinarian and valid for 4 months . A document that must be issued at the earliest 10 days before the planned date of entry into the community area.

This was announced by the British government on Wednesday (December 16, 2020), as reported by 20 Minutes .

Among other provisions which shall apply from 1 January 2021, also included the obligatory passage of animals by specific entry points, where documents will be checked.

The presence of an electronic identification chip and the anti-rabies vaccine , already in force in the past, will still be required. Just like the deworming of the animal in some countries.

Owners of UK dogs, cats and ferrets will also need to adhere to these measures if they plan to travel to Northern Ireland .
