In an open letter addressed to Presidents Putin and Aliyev, the Brigitte Bardot Foundation, through the voice of its president, asks that animal protection groups can intervene in Nagorno-Karabakh, the scene of an armed conflict.
On November 10, a ceasefire agreement was announced by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia , the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the President of the Russian Federation . This put an end to a month and a half of war in Nagorno-Karabakh , an area that Azeris and Armenians have fought for since the collapse of the Soviet bloc.
Recent fighting has forced thousands of Armenians to flee the area , leaving many dogs and cats on their own . The fate of stray animals is no less worrying .
Animal welfare groups stand ready to rescue them , but cannot yet access “ dangerous areas where military experts are working ”, while “ thousands of dogs, cats and other domestic animals […] suffer without care, deprived food and water ”, worries Brigitte Bardot in the open letter she sent to Vladimir Poutine and Ilham Aliyev (Azeri President).
Here is the letter in its entirety, published on December 1 on the Twitter account of the Brigitte Bardot Foundation:
