History of the breed

As one of the white mountain dogs, the Slovak Chuvatch descends, as such, from arctic wolves that arrived in the Caucasus and the Balkans , especially in the Rhodope mountain range, the Carpathians, Abruzzo and the Alps. For its part, the Slovak Chuvatch was bred and selected by farmers and shepherds established on the heights of the Tatras, in present-day Slovakia. His role was to protect their herds and farms from bears, wolves and robbers. Only subjects with white coats were selected to distinguish them from wild beasts in low light, which is why all current representatives of the breed wear exclusively this color.

Physical features

His hair: wavy, very dense on the whole body, with the exception of the head and limbs. The outer coat is associated with a fine and dense undercoat, the whole giving the dog a good protection against the cold and bad weather.
Its color: entirely and only white.
His head: rather long and well proportioned to the rest of the body. The skull is strong, elongated in shape, wide between the eyes and its flat top. The stop is moderate, the nose is black, the muzzle straight, broad and tapering towards its end. The lips are tight, the jaws powerful and articulated in full scissors.
His ears: set high, very mobile, especially at their base, of moderate length and hanging.
His eyes: dark brown, oval in shape, arranged horizontally and displaying a very expressive look.
Its body: powerful, impressive and writable in a rectangle, its length being greater than its height at the withers. The topline is straight and of medium length, the loins moderately arched, well attached to the sacrum and well muscled. The chest is broad, the ribs well sprung and the belly moderately raised.
Its tail: set rather low, carried low also at rest.

The Slovak Chuvatch is a loyal and extremely courageous dog , always ready to face possible intruders, even when it comes to ferocious animals. He was thus bred to repel wolves, even bears that came too close to the herd or to his master’s property. The Slovak Chuvatch inherited this temperament, making it both a remarkably alert watchdog and a great companion for the whole family.

Education

The Slovak Chuvatch demands a firm education , but without any form of brutality. The teacher must keep his authority over him from an early age to prevent unwanted behavior. Obedient and intelligent , this dog loves to learn and loves to please his master. Qualities that are to be exploited in his education by using rewards and encouragement .

Living conditions

the   Slovak Chuvatch   needs space and activity to be happy. He will therefore prefer to live in a house with a large fenced garden , rather than in an apartment.

Health

the   Slovak Chuvatch   is a strong and resistant dog . He enjoys good health and there is no predisposition to any particular disease in this breed. However, as with all large dogs, the risk of hip and / or elbow dysplasia cannot be ruled out completely.

Maintenance and hygiene

the   Slovak Chuvatch   is subject to an annual moult , usually occurring as summer approaches and during which it can lose considerable amounts of hair. For the rest, its maintenance remains basic and not very restrictive .

This dog needs a good weekly brushing to maintain his beautiful white coat. During the moult, it should be brushed every day to get rid of dead hairs.

Its hair, ears, eyes and pads should be examined after each outing in the wild to detect and remove any debris or external parasites. His teeth need to be brushed frequently to remove tartar build-up and the proliferation of bacteria. Finally, if they do not wear out naturally, its claws need to be cut.
