History of the breed
The Spinone is the descendant of the wire-haired hunting dogs described for a long time in Italy . Canids with physical peculiarities close to the breed were already represented in medieval frescoes. In the 15th century, the engraver and painter of early Renaissance Andrea Mantegna made it appear in his work adorning the ducal palace in Mantua. In 1683, Jean de Sacquespée , viscount of Sélincourt , commander of the Grand Dauphin venery, spoke of a griffin from Piedmont in his work entitled Le Parfait chasseur .

Education

Obedient |
A quality socialization and carried out early allows to temper the inclinations of hunting and pursuit of Spinone towards small mammals. Likewise, learning to recall is essential to prevent running away. This dog is not particularly difficult to train. Learning and training based on positive methods , focusing in particular on rewards, make the Spinone an obedient and balanced companion.

If he appreciates family life and the closeness of his owners, the Spinone largely prefers to evolve in a house with a large fenced garden than in an apartment. It is quite possible for him to adapt to an urban living environment, on condition that he leaves it frequently and for a long time. The goal is to allow him to breathe, to exert himself, to meet as many people as possible and to appeal to his senses. In short, stay active . Otherwise, the Spinone may get bored quickly.

Hip dysplasia and hereditary polyneuropathy (hereditary Leonberger polyneuropathy), a disease more affecting males and caused by damage to the nerves that connect the spinal cord to the muscles, are the main concerns regarding the health of Spinone. It is therefore advisable to perform screening tests, which are available for these 2 genetic conditions.
Spinone is also concerned by the risk of dilation-torsion of the stomach.
For the rest, there is not much to fear for this sturdy dog .

Ease of grooming |
Not having an undercoat, the Spinone is characterized by moderate hair loss. This does not dispense with regular maintenance , which is essential for maintaining the health and appearance of its skin and coat. Especially since his hair can tend to get tangled and accommodate debris over time and outings.
A good weekly grooming session ensures health and well-being in the Spinone. It includes a complete brushing, cleaning of the inside of the ears, as well as that of the eyes. Not to mention brushing her teeth to prevent tartar formation and periodontal disease. He only needs 2 baths on average per year , unless he got too dirty during a walk.

Food
Since Spinone is potentially subject to stomach dilation-torsion, it is recommended that you divide your daily ration into 2 meals instead of giving it all at once. He needs a quality diet that is balanced and adapted to his lifestyle. Premium type industrial kibble is a good choice for this dog.
