History of the breed

The Pekingese breed is very old. As its name suggests, it is of Chinese origin and very quickly had a sacred character with the imperial court in China . Stealing, mistreating or killing one of these dogs was then punishable by the death penalty, which is to say the value that the animal had in the eyes of the Chinese at that time.

However, Pekingese were stolen after the looting of the Summer Palace in October 1860 by British military troops during the Second Opium War. Some of these dogs were taken to England. It landed on English soil and was offered to Queen Victoria, the Duchess of Wellington and the Duchess of Richmond. Today he is still very popular and considered a very good companion dog. The official current standard of the breed was published on March 26, 2009.

Physical features

His coat: moderately long and straight, without being excessively profuse. Full on the ears, limbs, tail and feet, with a mane that should not go beyond the shoulders. The outer coat is harsher than the undercoat, which is both thick and soft.
Its color: all dresses are admitted, with the exception of liver brown and albino.
His head: quite strong, rather broad than high. The skull is moderately broad, not domed, flat between the ears and broad between the eyes. The stop is marked.

The Pekingese have a moderately long coat and can therefore lose a lot of hair during the moult , especially in spring. This dog shines a regular and thorough maintenance , because its supplied hair can contain dirt collected during the walks.
