Other name: Reverend Jack Russell Terrier
The Parson Russell Terrier is a small working dog that is characterized by its tenacity and hardiness. Lively, agile and well-proportioned, he is built for speed and long-term efforts. The Parson Russell Terrier is rather leggy and has a shallow chest. These precise points are among those which distinguish it from its close cousin, the Jack Russell Terrier, which is a little more known to the general public. He’s just a little taller. For the rest, it has the same characteristics. Namely an adorable dog but who, with his natural restlessness, does not necessarily correspond to the elderly. He is as gentle as he is bursting with energy and will be a perfect hunting companion. Its maintenance and feeding are easy, its health very robust.

History of the breed
The Parson Russell Terrier comes straight from Great Britain, and England more specifically. It owes part of its name to the Reverend John (Jack) Russell . The latter gave birth to this canine in 1795 near Dartsmouth in Devon. The Parson Russell Terrier comes from exactly the same crosses as his friend the Jack Russell Terrier. With the difference that he is slightly taller than his cousin.
Thus, it comes from a strain of Fox Terriers. John Russell wanted a dog with the ability to find foxes in their den. This is how this dog was very popular with hunters and riders. This is still the case since the end of World War II. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale recognized the breed definitively on June 4, 2001.

Its head: wedge-shaped, relatively long and powerful. The skull is flat, moderately broad and tapering gradually towards the eyes. The stop is not very marked.
Its ears: V-shaped, falling forward, sized in proportion to the head, with the tip reaching the outer corner of the eye.
His eyes: almond-shaped, dark, displaying an expression of liveliness and intelligence.
Its body: well proportioned, slightly longer than the height from the withers to the ground. The back is solid and straight, the loins strong and slightly curved, the chest shallow and the ribs well sloping back.
Its tail: of medium length, ideally straight, strong at its attachment and thinning at the end, attached high and carried well raised in action (lower at rest). Shortened by the past.

The Parson Russell Terrier is an alert, confident and cheerful dog . He is full of energy and boldness . Always inclined to work and persevering , he has all the qualities of a hunting dog and is particularly good at digging up . It is for this task that he was selected. It is less common as a companion dog than its cousin, the Jack Russell Terrier, but the Parson Russell Terrier can also be a pleasant companion around the house . Like the Jack Russell Terrier, he loves to play with children but can be slightly abrupt.
Her natural kindness helps her in this sense. He is not necessarily hyperactive but needs to always have something to do. Even if he is independent , he does not appreciate solitude . Travel doesn’t bother him at all. You have to think about enclosing its exterior to prevent this dog from running away . In addition, it is a dog very loyal to his master and his adoptive family. He will never be aggressive or even dangerous.

For this kind of active dog, it is recommended to teach him the recall and obedience from an early age . Love the cold |
Even if he has been able to adapt very easily to life in an urban environment , the Parson Russell Terrier is above all a born hunter who appreciates being able to evolve on natural terrain . He is therefore more of a country dog than a city dog. Work and activity are his real reasons for being: keeping him cloistered between the 4 walls of an apartment all day would make him extremely unhappy .
The Parson Russell Terrier is therefore aimed at active people, often willing to take long hikes in the countryside or in the woods.

Ease of gaining weight |
Rustic and resistant dog, the Parson Russell Terrier does not fear climatic conditions thanks to its dense coat. He also has fairly solid health , since there is no particular predisposition associated with the breed. However, it will be necessary to watch his kneecaps , very stressed during his long and intense efforts in hunting action, as well as his eyes .

Ease of grooming |
The Parson Russell Terrier is not a very difficult to maintain dog . In the smooth-haired variety, moulting is almost permanent and hair loss as well. It is then a question of removing the dead hair to preserve the natural appearance of the dog’s coat.
It is recommended to brush the dog regularly using a rubber picot glove to remove dead hair. Grooming is not necessary except possibly for the wire-haired variety which can be groomed 2-3 times per year. It is also not recommended to wash it too often so as not to alter the structure of its skin and its protective layer of sebum.
