The Norfolk Terrier is a sturdy little dog, one of the smallest among terriers. Compact and low on legs, it is solidly built and has good bone structure. The Norfolk Terrier bears a striking resemblance to the Norwich Terrier, but is distinguished by its floppy ears, while they are straight in the Norwich Terrier. For the rest, the 2 races have extremely similar characteristics.

History of the breed

The Norfolk-Terrier breed is the result of contributions from various British terriers. It bears its name from the eponymous town . Its development began towards the end of the 19th century. This dog has long been bred to hunt small rodents and other pests. In the past, it was not considered to correspond to a full breed, but rather as a variety of the Norwich Terrier, differing from it mainly by the posture of the ears (drooping in the Norfolk Terrier, straight in its close cousin of Norwich). It entered the English Kennel Club in 1932, then the United States Kennel Club in 1936. The breed was definitively recognized by the FCI on October 1, 1966.

The Norfolk Terrier is an energetic , lively, active dog with great courage , while being pleasant company and without looking for a fight unnecessarily. He gets along rather well with his fellows and remains attached to his master and his family . A strong instinct to hunt pests, especially small rodents, sometimes leads him to be turbulent vis-à-vis small animals. He is also a good alarm dog who will alert the slightest intrusion into his master’s house.

Education…
Naturally sociable , the Norfolk Terrier Nevertheless, it should be socialized early enough with other animals, especially smaller ones. He is not the most docile of terriers, but an education made with a skilful mix of firmness and affection makes him an excellent companion.

Ease of grooming

the Norfolk Terrier remains subject to moderate shedding and hair loss . It is quite easy to maintain , as long as this maintenance is carried out on a regular basis. Frequent grooming is to be avoided in this dog so as not to alter the rustic and natural appearance of his coat.

Exits…
He must benefit from long daily outings and varied exercises to satisfy his need for activity. His past as a pest hunter means that he cannot stand to stand there and do nothing.

Hygiene…
It is recommended to brush the dog with a wire brush once a week if he lives in an apartment and several times a week (or even every day) if he frequently ventures into the countryside or the forest. His hair should not be clipped or cut, but epilations can be done twice a year.
