History of the breed

A versatile sight hunter , the Azawakh Greyhound was also traditionally used to keep predators at bay . He courageously faced hyenas, jackals, and even lions. He has long accompanied the nomads Tuaregs, Peuls and Dahoussahaqs across the hostile Saharan expanses, towards the Sahel. Among the Tuaregs, it is called Oska. The Azawakh Greyhound began to be exported and bred in Europe from the late 1960s . The race of Greyhound Azawakh was definitively recognized by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) on June 3, 1980. Its official FCI standard in force was published on November 3, 2014.

Physical features

His hair: very short, fine, absent in the belly.
Its color: fawn (black brindle or not) in all shades (light sand to dark fawn). Presence of black mask on the muzzle allowed.
His head: elongated, fine, narrow, lean and well defined. The skull is almost flattened, less wide than long. The superciliary arches, the frontal furrow and the stop are not very marked. The nose is black or dark brown, the nostrils well open, the muzzle elongated, straight and fine, the lips thin, well joined, black or dark brown, the jaws strong and articulated in scissors, the cheeks flat.
His ears: thin, drooping, flat, set high, triangular in shape and rounded ends. Slightly raised when the dog is attentive.
His eyes: large, almond-shaped, dark or amber in color.
His body: writable in a rectangle and giving an impression of elegance and finesse. The neck is well extended, long and finely muscled, the top line straight, the withers well extended, the kidney short, the croup inclined at 45 °, the chest high, the chest narrow, the ribs long and slightly visible, the belly climbed very high.
Its tail: low set, of good length, not very thick, covered with a short hair and endowed with a white brush at the end. Drooping when the dog is at rest, raised above the horizontal when in action.

The Azawakh Greyhound is therefore a good daily companion, but his favorite field is hunting , a role for which he has traditionally been bred. Broken to the difficult living conditions of the nomads he accompanied, he inherited a fairly assertive character, but without being excessively stubborn. Lively and particularly attentive , it was used for sight hunting for gazelle, ostrich or hare.
