History of the breed

The Fila de Sao Miguel is, as its name suggests, originally from the island of Saint Miguel , part of the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. He is said to be descended from a very ancient indigenous breed called the Chien de Terceira, which unfortunately has disappeared. Today, he remains little known outside his native region.

Physical features

His hair: short, dense, rough in texture, forming light fringes in certain places (mainly the tail, the area of the anus and the back of the thighs).
Its color: fawn, dark sand, light to dark gray, necessarily brindle, with or without white mark on the forehead and chest.
His head: powerful and well proportioned to the whole. The skull is square, broad, with a slightly domed top, the occipital protuberance inconspicuous and the longitudinal axes parallel to those of the muzzle. The stop is marked, the nose broad and very black, the muzzle straight, the muzzle slightly shorter than the skull and moderately rounded on the sides. The lips are well pigmented and firm, the mouth well split, the jaws strong, well developed and articulated in scissors or pincers.
His ears: triangular in shape, set above the line of the eyes, of medium size and drooping, but not contiguous to the cheeks.
His eyes: oval, slightly sunken, dark brown in color, set horizontally, medium in size and extremely expressive.
His body: writable in a rectangle (the height at the withers is less than the length), strong, well muscled. The chest is ample and well let down, the back straight, the kidney moderately long, of good width and well muscled, the croup of medium length and a little higher than the withers, the belly and the sides well proportioned in relation to the body and the bottom line raised.
Its tail: thick, high set, moderately long and a little curved.
