History of the breed

Coton de Tulear finds its origins in the region of Tulear in the south of Madagascar . Like many breeds, its history remains uncertain. Nevertheless, his descent with various types of lapdogs, present on commercial vessels of French settlers in the 16th century, is obvious. The first specimen brought back to France dates from 1977. The breed standard was recognized in 1970.

Ease of grooming

The coat of the Coton de Tulear requires a lot of attention . This breed does not experience seasonal shedding , just very little hair loss all year round.

Almost daily brushing is required to avoid irreversible knots , with about one bath per month to preserve the texture of the hair and its plush appearance. Coton de Tulear must be used to this healthy lifestyle from an early age. Brushing will quickly become a beautiful moment of sharing between the dog and his master. However, you must make sure to use a shampoo suited to your hair and dry it properly with a hair dryer. If the dog’s fluffy coat isn’t groomed regularly, even a professional groomer won’t be able to do anything about it. He will then have to shave it.

Brushing your teeth regularly helps eliminate tartar buildup and the growth of bacteria. If her fingernails do not wear out naturally, it is best to trim them. If you are new to this, it is recommended that you seek advice from a veterinarian. Finally, his eyes and ears should be checked every week to make sure there are no traces of dirt or any infection.
