History of the breed

While the Clumber-Spaniel breed was developed in Britain , it appears that its ancient origins are in France . It was reportedly brought to the British Isles by the Duke of Newcastle. The latter would then have started a breeding on his property, that of Clumber Park , in the county of Nottinghamshire (central-eastern England). It is therefore from this house that the dog takes its name .

The standards of the breed have gradually evolved over the ages, but it is especially in terms of weight that changes have been noted. Indeed, already rather heavy at the origin, the Clumber-Spaniel saw its weight increase significantly around the middle of the last century. The breed was definitively recognized by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) on December 9, 1954.
