History of the breed

The Greenland Dog is one of the oldest dog breeds. Its origin goes back, in fact, to 4 or 5 millennia . T raditionally bred and used by the Inuit , it was also popular with the first Vikings who arrived in Greenland, who in turn employed it. From the start, the Greenland Dog was able to be appreciated for his strength, his determination, his confidence and his remarkable endurance. Today, it is difficult to find Greenland Dogs in France, as their number is very limited.

Physical features

His hair: straight, rough, neither curly nor wavy, runs at the level of the head and the legs, longer and denser on the rest of the body. Combined with a soft and dense undercoat, the whole gives it excellent protection against the cold and harshness of the Arctic.
Its color: all solid and combined colors, except albino and merle marks.
His head: the skull is broad, especially between the ears, and slightly domed. The stop is pronounced without being abrupt.
Its ears: small in size, triangular in shape, with rounded endings, well erected and with very lively pavilions.
His eyes: placed at an angle, displaying a determined and confident expression, dark in color and in keeping with that of the dog’s coat.
Its body: robust, compact, slightly longer than the height at the withers. The top line is horizontal, the back is straight, the kidney wide, the croup slightly oblique, the chest well let down and broad, the bottom line slightly raised.
Its tail: covered with a longer hair on the underside giving it a bushy appearance. Tied high, thick, carried in an arch or slightly rolled up on the back.

The Greenland Dog remains subject to seasonal moulting resulting in fairly significant hair loss. For the rest, its maintenance is not tedious .

It is recommended to brush the dog once a week . During the moult regular weeding is necessary to rid its generous coat of dead hairs. Its legs should be examined after the effort in order to detect any lesions that could hinder its course.

Her teeth need to be brushed regularly to eliminate tartar build-up and the proliferation of bacteria. Finally, if they do not wear out naturally, its claws need to be cut. If you are new to this, it is recommended that you seek advice from a veterinarian or groomer.
