History of the breed

The Romagna Water Dog is an ancient breed of waterfowl tappers developed in the lowlands of Comacchio and the wetlands of Ravenna, in the historic region of Romagna (northern Italy). Little by little, with the drying up of these vast plots and their transformation into agricultural land, he was converted into a truffle dog, taking advantage of his powerful flair. The Romagna Water Dog breed was first recognized on a provisional basis by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) on March 10, 1995, before being definitively recognized 10 years later.

Physical features

The Romagna Water Dog is characterized by a robust and well-proportioned constitution, inscribed in a square (the height at the withers is approximately equal to the length).

Its coat: dense, curly, woolly in texture, semi-hard on the surface, associated with a clearly visible top coat. The eyebrows are plentiful, as is the mustache and beard.
Its color: unicolour off-white, brown in all its shades or orange, two-tone white with brown or orange markings, roan-brown.
Its head: trapezoidal in shape and moderately large when viewed from above. The upper longitudinal axes of the skull and muzzle are slightly divergent. The skull is wide at the level of the zygomatic arch. Seen from the side, from the occiput to the stop sign, the skull appears longer than the muzzle. The frontal sinuses are well developed, unlike the occipital ridge which is short. The stop is obvious, but not overly pronounced. The nose is broad and the nostrils well open and mobile. The muzzle is quite wide and a bit shorter than the skull. The lips are not too thick and, viewed from the side, they form a wide semicircle. Jaws strong and articulated in scissors or pincers.
Its ears: medium in size compared to the head, triangular in shape with rounded ends, wide at their base, set just above the zygomatic arches, hanging or slightly raised when the dog is attentive.
His eyes: rather large, but not exaggerated, round, rather wide apart. The color of the iris ranges from ocher to dark brown or hazelnut, in accordance with the color of the coat.
His body: compact and strong. The top line is straight from the withers to the croup. The back is straight and well muscled. The kidney is rather short, powerful, slightly convex when seen in profile. The croup is long, broad and muscular. The chest is well developed and well let down to the elbows.
Its tail: of medium high attachment, covered with a woolly hair, carried in saber when the dog is at rest and raised when it is active.
