History of the breed
The origins of the Frisian Water Dog breed are as old as they are unknown. It is believed to have originated from crosses between a Gypsy dog and a Frisian dog. As its name suggests, it was in the Dutch province of Friesland that it was developed. The Frisian Water Dog was once used for hunting small mammals and waterfowl , including otters, various other mustelids, and waterfowl. World War II almost got the better of the breed; on the verge of extinction, it was saved by enthusiasts who maintained their farms. Despite everything, this dog remains quite rare nowadays and it is very little encountered outside its region of origin.

Ease of grooming |
the Frisian Water Dog remains subject to a seasonal moult during which it loses substantial – but not exaggerated – amounts of hair. Its maintenance does not present any particular constraint , as long as it is carried out regularly .
Regular brushing helps keep the dog’s coat and skin clean. During moulting, brushing becomes more frequent to remove dead hair.
Its hair, ears, eyes and pads should be examined after each outing in the wild to detect and remove any debris or external parasites. His teeth need to be brushed frequently to remove tartar build-up and the proliferation of bacteria. Finally, if they do not wear out naturally, its claws need to be cut. If you are new to this, it is recommended that you seek advice from a veterinarian or groomer.
