History of the breed

The distant ancestors of the Italian Hound are the hounds of ancient Egypt. They were probably brought to the Italic Peninsula with the Phoenician merchants . Representations of dogs with similar physical characteristics can be found in many works of art, including statues of Diana the Huntress (Naples Museum) and Diana Archery (Vatican Museum).

Physical features

His hair: can be of 2 different textures. In the Italian Shorthaired Hound, it is very short all over the body, dense, prone and uniformly smooth. In the Italian Wire-haired Hound, it is rough, more or less 5 cm long, softer on the head, ears, limbs, tail and muzzle.
Its color: unicolour fawn in all shades, two-tone black and tan (fawn markings on the muzzle, eyebrows, chest, limbs and perineum).
Its head: oblong, characterized by a divergence of the upper longitudinal axes of the skull and the muzzle. The skull is almost oval in shape when viewed from above. The superciliary arches are moderately developed, the frontal furrow very slightly marked, the occipital crest short and prominent and the stop not very marked. The nose is rather large and black in color, the nostrils open and lively, the muzzle half the length of the head, the lips not thick and not very developed in height, the jaws in the shape of a truncated cone and articulated in scissors. (a pincer joint is also allowed), flat and dry cheeks.
Its ears: drooping and twisted, projected forward but not folded back on themselves, attached to the line of the zygomatic arches or slightly below, rectangular in shape, wide, flat and ending in points.
His eyes: large, shiny, almond-shaped, dark ocher in color and displaying a gentle expression.
His body: writable in a square and dry. The top line forms a straight line from the withers to the croup. The withers blend harmoniously into the base of the neck, the back is straight, the croup slightly convex at the level of its upper profile and well muscled, the chest well rounded but not barrel-shaped, the lower line straight.
Its tail: high set in the continuity of the croup, not very thick at its base and just as thin over its entire length, until it ends in a reduced point.

Maintenance and hygiene

Ease of maintenance
Cost of maintenance
Hair loss

Ease of grooming

The Italian Hound only requires basic maintenance . The Wire-haired Italian Hound requires a little more effort on this point, but maintaining it is not very restrictive . Regular care and inspections must be done in both varieties, especially after outings.

It is recommended to brush the Italian Shorthaired Hound once a week and the Italian Wirehaired Hound a little more often ( 2-3 times a week ).

Its hair, ears, eyes and pads should be examined after each outing in the wild to detect and remove any debris or external parasites. His teeth need to be brushed frequently to remove tartar build-up and the proliferation of bacteria. Finally, if they do not wear out naturally, its claws need to be cut. If you are new to this, it is recommended that you seek advice from a veterinarian or groomer.
