The Basset Artésien-Normand is initially a pack dog. An excellent hunter, he is the perfect dog in rabbit hunting parties. With a body that is longer than it is tall, he exhibits the qualities of courage, stubbornness and resourcefulness. He is intelligent, very lively and his facial expressions make him an irresistible dog. The Basset Artesien-Normand has become a real pet. He hates loneliness and will perish quickly if he does not have the necessary company. He is affectionate, gentle, cheerful and appreciates the presence of children, with whom he will play until he no longer wants to.

History of the breed

The Basset Artésien-Normand was born in the 1870s. It is the result of a cross between the Basset de Normandie and the Basset d’Artois , at the time of the first French Bassets. Count Jean-Emmanuel Le Coulteux de Canteleu and Louis Lane are considered to be the creators of this breed. The first focused on the creation of a utility dog with straight forelegs (the Artois) while the second favored a dog with twisted forelegs (the Normand). The name Basset Artesian-Norman will come about at the beginning of the 20th century.

25 years after the creation of the first standard (1898), the breed was made official in 1924. Gradually, the breed was introduced in England and the United States. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale recognizes the Basset Artésien-Normand on October 29, 1963.
