History of the breed
The breed of the Wire-haired Istrian Hound descends from an ancient breed of hunting dog originating in Istria, the Adriatic peninsula in present-day Croatia. His harsh coat allowed him to withstand the low temperatures in this largely mountainous region. The Wire-haired Istrian Hound was first described in a 1719 manuscript, written by the Bishop of Dakovo, Petar Bakic. Itself indicates that the origin of the breed dates back to the 14th century. The FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) published the first standard of the breed of the Wire-haired Istrian Hound on April 6, 1955, recognizing it definitively at the same time. The official FCI standard currently in force was published on November 3, 2014.
