History of the breed

The Beauceron began to be considered as a race from the late 19th ^century. We can date their first official appearance in 1896, during a dog show . It was at this time that this name, as well as those of Chien de Beauce and Bas-Rouge, began to be used. They denoted French sheepdogs of the same type which presented a short face, a hard and short coat and cropped ears. This breed is the result of a selection made by shepherds who fed only the dogs most suited to the work of driving and guarding herds, leaving the others to wither.

Physical features

His hair : short, thick and hard. It is close to the head and 3 or 4 centimeters across the rest of the body. The hair is fringed on the buttocks and below the tail.
Its color : There are two varieties of Beauceron. Bas-Rouge, mostly black, with tan markings distributed on the underside of the muzzle, body and at the base of the legs. The Harlequin Beauceron has the same distribution of tan markings, but its coat is made up of equal parts of gray and black spots.
His head : long and well chiseled. The skull (flat or slightly rounded) is the same length as the muzzle.
His ears : high placed, they are semi erect or drooping, flat and short. They point slightly forward.
His eyes : horizontal, a little oval and dark.
His body : slightly longer than high. Imposing dog, muscular, but not heavy, the withers are well marked, the chest is high, broad and long.
Its tail : left whole, carried low. It goes down at least to the point of the hock.

The Beauceron is a wise and bold dog. His shepherd dog heritage has made him a tough, powerful and work-loving animal. These qualities coupled with his intelligence make him very versatile. It can be used for guarding, defense or utility tasks. He keeps the family home like no one else. He is also an excellent companion dog, with great loyalty to a master who has earned his respect and trust. He barks little or little, only when necessary. He is dissuasive , but shows great sensitivity with his adoptive family. Bold and frank , he has a sense of responsibility.

Education

The education of the Beauceron can be long and the master must know how to be firm. The education given to Beauceron must be strict, but also gentle . From an early age, he must be socialized , in particular to accept the presence of other animals on his territory. The Beauceron will not hesitate to refuse the orders if the person giving them has not succeeded in gaining his respect and his trust. This is why it will be necessary to educate this dog with great firmness, but without brutality.

Living conditions

As Beauceron needs a lot of space, city life will require long regular walks. The ideal for him is a house in the country, with a large garden where he can walk and exercise at leisure. Finally, it is not adapted to the solitary life, an absence of contact with the man can lead it to become too dominant. With its size, the Beauceron does not adapt well to apartment life. He can thus spend most of his time outdoors, watching out for the slightest intruder and protecting his territory.

Health

The selection of the strongest animals by shepherds over the centuries has made today’s Beaucerons surprisingly vigorous dogs. They do not decline and remain the same until the end of their days. However, it is necessary to watch out for dewclaws which can be easily injured during long country outings. He is not afraid of climatic differences.

However, he is subject to a few illnesses related to his size. So, he can develop hip dysplasia . He is also prone to progressive retinal atrophy . Maintenance and hygiene

The Beauceron being a rustic dog, it does not require any particular grooming . It experiences a moult in the spring and with the approach of winter .

A weekly or bi-weekly brushing is sufficient for this dog who does not require very extensive maintenance.

It is advisable to brush your Beauceron twice a week or after a walk in the forest to detect any parasites. One bath per year is more than enough, except when bathing in the sea or in a pond to ensure rinsing. His eyes and ears may be checked from time to time, but he does not develop any ENT pathology. His nails are to be cut regularly. If you’ve never cut a dog’s claws before, it’s best to seek advice from a veterinarian.

Food

The food of Beauceron must be rich, because it has a very important appetite . Nevertheless, it is advisable to observe periods of rest before and after each ration, because of a possible torsion of the stomach. Beauceron must ingest between 500 and 700 grams of high quality kibble per day. Whether in a single meal (in the evening) or 2 (a light in the morning and a hearty in the evening).

The Beauceron is a shepherd dog used to traveling long distances. He needs a lot of physical exercise and regular outings , preferably long distances.
