History of the breed
Descended from the ancient Caucasian dogs, the Caucasian Shepherd was traditionally employed by Russians and residents of surrounding areas to guide and protect their flocks. He was also responsible for guarding their homes and protecting their families. His physical strength, endurance and ability to withstand difficult climatic conditions quickly enabled him to establish himself in this dual role. The selection of the breed began in the former USSR from the 1920s. The Caucasian Shepherd is quite rare in France, which explains its high price. The breed standard was established in 1985.

Education

Obedient |
His calm temperament hides impressive defensive and offensive faculties. If he has no other choice, the Caucasian Shepherd can make use of his powerful bite, even if he prefers mostly to kick paws during clashes. Therefore, this type of dog must be educated in a balanced and firm manner from an early age .
Rather, it is intended for an active and experienced master. It is not necessarily recommended for beginners. Indeed, you have to have a little experience behind. Socializing them remains essential to lower their level of mistrust . Thus, it should be exposed to different environments and to different people and animals.

The Caucasian Shepherd Dog is made to live in a rural or mountain environment , and much less in the city. He is happier in the midst of large open expanses which allow him the possibility of evolving freely and observing his environment. Apartment life is not ideal for this large dog. A house with a large fenced garden would suit him better.

In the Caucasian Shepherd, you should generally expect 2 moults per year , with hair loss that can be significant. Its fairly thick coat requires regular maintenance to stay clean and provide effective protection for the dog. Maintenance depends on the variety of the Caucasian Shepherd. Those with a long coat will need to be brushed several times a week to avoid the formation of knots.
It is recommended to brush the dog at least every week , especially during the molts. The oral hygiene of the Caucasian Shepherd Dog is important. Do not hesitate to brush the teeth of this canine regularly to avoid any deposit of tartar . In addition, monitoring is required at the level of the ears and eyes. Cleaning should be done quite often.
