With his mane reminiscent of a lion and his slightly sullen expression, the Chow Chow is a dog with notable physical characteristics. His big head, his blue tongue and his very dense coat do not leave indifferent. The Chow Chow is not the most tender of dogs. Not that he is aggressive, far from it, but this Chinese canine with 2 varieties (long hair and short hair) only very rarely shows his attachment to his master. Yet it is real. The Chow Chow is loyal and sincere, but has a difficult character and a strong temperament. It is not to be put in the hands of a neophyte.

Physical features

His hair : short, very abundant, smooth and slightly fluffy; in the long version (more frequent), the hair is also supplied and swollen.
Its color : the dress must be monochrome (black, red, fawn, blue, cream or white). Shades can appear, in particular under the tail and at the level of the panties, often lighter.
His head : broad, voluminous and flat.
His ears : of moderate size and rounded in shape, they are thick, set apart and very straight on the head. The tips are directed forward and tend to converge.
His eyes : their size is normally average. They are oval, neat and a bit sunken. Normally dark, they can also be the color of the coat in blue and fawn Chow-Chows.
His body : the body is compact, horizontal, short and strong. The chest is broad and low, the shoulders muscular. The forelegs are straight and the hind legs as devoid of angulation as possible (hence the particularly stilted gait of the Chow-Chow)
Its tail : it is set high and carried well reversed, on the back.

Behavior with others

Love strangers

The Chow Chow is a dog with an extraordinary character . If he appreciates his master very much , he hardly likes to play or to show his affection openly. He is distant and seems very proud. It tolerates children , but is not suitable for activities with them. He is a good guardian , who barks little. He protects his territory. He does not appreciate that strangers stroke him on the head : this gesture is reserved for his masters. He gets along badly with other dogs . He is loyal, faithful , especially with his master, but particularly distant . He rarely shows affection. He is proud, independent but remains very calm .

Education

Clever
Obedient

His education should be taken as soon as possible. The Chow Chow is not a dog to put in everyone’s hands. It takes some experience to understand and educate it. His character does not make things easier. You have to be rigorous and firm, but also know how to be gentle and delicate . His master must be confident and control his gestures. Because the Chow Chow will not hesitate to gain the upper hand if he feels in a position of strength. Strict rules must be taken because this canine does not like, at first glance, human authority.

Living conditions

Suitable for apartment living
Good for new masters
Love it hot
Love the cold

The Chow Chow tolerates solitude quite well . Silent, he does not have a permanent need for exercise . However, it will be better in a house than in an apartment. Its original character requires an attentive, firm and very quiet master. The Chow Chow adapts perfectly to apartment living . He is very clean , is not restless and barks very little . It is therefore perfect for living in joint ownership. He will also adapt perfectly to life in the country , where he will happily go for a run outside if he has a garden.

Health

Solid
Ease of gaining weight

It is a very robust dog, whose only real worries can be related to the selection. Note, however, that the thick dress they benefit from can, when it is disproportionate (this is a defect), inconvenience them in the event of great heat . Likewise, they get tired quickly when playing.

The Chow Chow is prone to overweight . It is therefore advisable to pay careful attention to his diet . Additionally, this dog can develop hip and elbow dysplasia . It will therefore be necessary to ensure that you moderate your physical activity during the first months of your life. In addition, it does not pose any other health problem and does not have any hereditary disease .

Maintenance and hygiene

Cost of maintenance

Ease of grooming

During its moults, especially in spring and autumn, the Chow Chow needs to be brushed very regularly . This is a necessary task regardless of the length of the coat, but it is of course more demanding for individuals with long hairs. This is the only solution to avoid the formation of knots.

The Chow Chow can be washed regularly (once a month for example), but it must be thoroughly rinsed and dried with a hairdryer after each wash. In addition, his hair should also be combed through as he has a tendency to develop eczema . In addition to regular brushing , which is more intense for the long-haired variety, the Chow Chow should have their eyes cleaned carefully and meticulously. Indeed, this breed of dog tends to cry quite often.

Brushing the teeth of the Chow Chow eliminates the appearance of tartar and the proliferation of bacteria. His nails can be cut if necessary, if they are too long. If you are new to this, it is recommended that you seek advice from a veterinarian.

Food

Due to some gastric issues that he can develop, it is important to feed the Chow Chow 2-3 meals per day rather than just one. Its diet must be composed mainly of meat, which can be given in its simplest aspect or through suitable and high quality croquettes . Its diet can therefore be based on industrial or human food .

Potential to play

The Chow Chow is a very calm dog, for whom looks are more important than games. It is not a particularly very athletic dog. He is not at all a player and therefore will not be able to spend himself physically through the game. The only way is to have several daily outings. They are really beneficial because without it, it will tend to crust and promote the appearance of obesity.
