History of the breed

The precise origins of the Mallorcan Sheepdog are not known, but its ancestors would have been brought to the Balearic Islands , in particular the island of Mallorca from which it takes its name, by merchants. The local inhabitants then developed the breed in such a way as to obtain a dog that could ensure their defense and that of their animals , for this crossing various varieties of sheepdogs with the Mastiff of Mallorca (Ca de Bou).

Physical features

His hair: short, well applied against the body, soft, fine and resistant. The outer coat is associated with a fine and tight undercoat. In the long-haired variety, it can measure over 7 cm and may be slightly wavy.
Its color: only black (ideally jet black), possibly with white on the chest, under the neck and on the feet.
His head: massive, but without the impression of heaviness. Well designed and harmonious proportions. The profile of the skull is slightly convex. The occipital ridge is marked, as is the stop which, however, is not abrupt. The nose is black, moist and the nostrils well open. The muzzle is broad and strong, the lips black and the jaws articulate in scissors, with the upper external incisors well in contact with the lower canines.
His ears: rather small, thick, set high, broken (bent and drooping), thrown back when the dog is at rest, straightened and detached from the cheeks when he is attentive.
His eyes: quite small in size, almond-shaped, slightly oblique, full of liveliness, light to dark in color (rosemary honey to carob honey). The gaze is both intelligent and suspicious.
His body: robust, well proportioned. The neck is massive, thick and muscular. The withers are marked, the top line straight and horizontal, the kidney wide and powerful, the croup moderately large and slightly rounded, the chest wide and well let down, the sides of medium size and the belly slightly raised.
Its tail: thick at its attachment, flattened from 8 cm from its attachment, with long fringes abundant in the long-haired variety, naturally drooping or curved outwards when the dog is at rest, flapping from left to right and raised in sickle when the dog is in motion.
