History of the breed

The race of   Welsh Springer Spaniel was developed from the English Springer and Clumber Spaniel, during the 17th century. The first breeding operations were held in Wales and in parts of the West of England , where the Welsh Springer Spaniel   Little by little, he showed his skills as a hunting dog, game hunter, but also as a sheepdog. Its first standard was established in 1902 by the Kennel Club of Great Britain. The race of   Welsh Springer Spaniel was definitively recognized by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) on December 30, 1954. Its official FCI standard in force was published on July 28, 2007.

Physical features

His hair: silky, dense, straight or flat, never curly or wavy. Forming bangs on the forelimbs and hindquarters, above the carpus and hock, as well as on the ears and tail.
Its color: red and white.
His head: rather long and slightly rounded. The skull is well proportioned, the top in a slight dome, well defined under the eyes and the stop well marked. The nose is dark flesh colored, the nostrils well developed, the muzzle moderately long and square, the jaws strong and articulated in scissors.
His ears: hanging, rather small and narrow, set rather low and shaped like a vine leaf.
His eyes: medium size and hazel or darker in color.
His body: of moderate length (not too high on the legs), powerful and muscular. The neck is long and muscular, the kidney moderately harped and well attached, the chest well let down and the ribs well sprung.
Its tail: set low, well fringed, in proportion to the whole body.

the   Welsh Springer Spaniel is a lively, cheerful and active dog, without being hyperactive. He shows a lot of spirit, intelligence and initiative , especially when he has the opportunity to hunt. A game-lifting dog, the Welsh Springer Spaniel also showcases its speed and endurance on a variety of terrains. At home, he is a pleasant companion for the whole family , including children. On the other hand, he is not particularly good at guarding. He is gentle , never aggressive, nor fearful.

As with any dog developed for hunting, the Welsh Springer Spaniel should learn recall as early as possible . His upbringing is no more complicated than that of another dog, simply requiring finding the right balance between firmness and gentleness . The use of any form of brutality is to be excluded. However, the use of positive reinforcement methods, based in particular on encouragement and rewards, is to be recommended.

the   Welsh Springer Spaniel is subject to moderate shedding during which hair loss is of moderate intensity. Its maintenance does not present any particular constraint . It consists of the basic care that is given to any type of dog.

It is recommended to brush the dog once or twice a week using a card to keep the coat clean and remove dead hair. The inside of his ears should be inspected and cleaned regularly to prevent infections. It can be bathed only if necessary .

Her teeth need to be brushed regularly to eliminate tartar build-up and the proliferation of bacteria. If they do not wear out naturally, its claws need to be cut. If you are new to this, it is recommended that you seek advice from a veterinarian or groomer.
