History of the breed

The Naples Mastiff is native to the south of the Italian peninsula , as its name suggests. He is one of the direct descendants of the great mastiffs used by the Roman legions , alongside whom he has long served as a fighting and guard dog. It thus spread throughout Europe, following the military conquests of the Roman Empire.

Gradually he was assigned to guard cattle herds, farms and homes. The breed then went into decline starting in the 19th century . A renewed interest in the breed was observed after the end of the 2nd World War, in particular thanks to the work of the doggie writer Piero Scanziani who had started to select the best specimens since the beginning of the 1930s. The FCI recognized the breed definitively on March 8, 1956.

Physical features

His hair: short (1.5 cm maximum), hard and rough to the touch, dense, uniformly smooth and fine, without any fringe.
