History of the breed

The development of the Jagdterrier breed began shortly after World War I , when a group of hunters withdrew from the Fox Terrier Club, founded in 1876. They wanted to create a breed of its own, totally hunting-oriented with very specific qualities (obedience, versatility, tenacity, ability to evolve in water …). This is how the German hunters and cynologists Rudolf Frieß, Walter Zangenberg and Carl-Erich Grünewald began to select black and tan Fox Terriers for underground hunting, based in particular on the 4 dogs entrusted by a zoo director.

Inputs from the Old English Wirehaired Terrier and the Welsh Terrier then helped shape the breed as we know it today. The Jadgterrier breed was definitively recognized by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) on December 2, 1954.
