The Saarloos Wolfdog is a dog of powerful and harmonious constitution, without heaviness. Its limbs are quite elongated, which gives the impression that it is relatively leggy. In addition to its lupoid-like appearance, it also draws its gait and attitude from the wolf, with a light demeanor very characteristic of its ancestor.

History of the breed
The Saarloos Wolfdog owes its name to the man to whom the breed is historically attributed . This is Leendert Saarloos (1884-1969), a Dutch breeder who had the idea of crossing a European she-wolf of Siberian strain with a German Shepherd . After several unsuccessful attempts, he was able to obtain a viable litter during the 1930s, including a male puppy which will serve as the basis for the development of the breed.
Over the selections, the heritage of the wolf will take precedence over that of the German Shepherd, so that the dog will prove to be less able to work than what Leendert Saarloos had hoped for. The breed was officially recognized in 1975, 6 years after the latter’s death. The Saarloos Wolfdog is very uncommonly found outside the Netherlands. The breed was definitively recognized by the FCI in 1981.

The Saarloos Wolfdog is a dog animated by great vivacity and considerable energy. He is also very intelligent and independent . The Saarloos Wolfdog is anything but a submissive animal, but that does not prevent it from being attached to its master, whom he must identify as the pack leader. He inherited fairly strong primitive instincts from the wolf, such as his tendency to distrust and flee from unfamiliar situations . These specificities mean that the Saarloos Wolfdog is not an excellent guard dog , but it remains a very good companion if it is respected and well educated.
