The Border Collie is a naturally elegant dog, exhibiting harmonious proportions. The Border Collie is docile and particularly lively. This is a dog that has a constant need to be on the move. Qualified as hyperactive, he does not know how to stay still. This can pose some problems, especially for city and apartment living. He stands up rather easily because he is intelligent and has a good understanding. His shepherd dog and hunting genes make him a faithful companion. He enjoys playing with the youngest and the presence of other animals does not bother him.

History of the breed

The Border Collie is known since the 17th century. It was not considered a race, strictly speaking. But most of the shepherds of the “Borders”, the border area between England and Scotland, had what was recognized in 1982 as a breed. If multi centenary, official recognition is paradoxically established at 20th century.

It owes its name to the Borders region, between Scotland and England, where it was once used as a sheepdog. It is the result of a cross between several shepherd breeds such as the Bobtail or the Bearded , but also hunting dogs such as the Pointer and the Setter . He has the soul of a working, hunting and shepherd dog. In the past, it was used to gather flocks of sheep and to guard farms. The breed standard was recognized by the FCI in 1977.

The Border Collie is an excellent sheepdog . Gathering what is scattered (like a herd) is a real obsession. Instinctively, this breed protects its family as well as its territory. Good training can make them a very good pet or put them at the top of the standings in agility and / or obedience competitions. Only small flaw, he tends to be hyperactive . It is thus not easy to calm his enthusiasm and his fidgeting.

Education

Clever
Obedient

The training of the Border Collie is rather easy , in particular because it is a very docile dog which responds immediately to the orders given. He needs to let off steam to listen. If his education is delayed, he can become aggressive. It must therefore be trained relatively early. He is strong- willed and intelligent, which works in his favor. Lively and intelligent , he constantly needs to move , it’s genetic. It is therefore important to channel this energy and teach it docility as soon as possible. He tends to be wary of strangers , but socializes very quickly.

Living conditions

Suitable for apartment living
Good for new masters
Love it hot
Love the cold

The Border Collie is not made for apartment living . He needs to spend his energy, which requires several walks during which he can run until he is breathless. In fact, he will only feel comfortable outdoors with space. It’s as good for his physique as his morale. The walks must be numerous and it is strongly recommended to enroll him in a dog sport so that he gets rid of his excess energy.

The Border Collie is not a difficult dog to maintain from a hygiene and health point of view . Regular brushing should suffice. However, to avoid digestive disorders, care must be taken that he does not exert himself physically after eating.

The coat should be brushed frequently . A wire brush with rounded ends will help loosen any knots that form in the coat. In addition, he can also take a bath 3 to 4 times a year .

Teeth should be brushed regularly to remove tartar buildup and the growth of bacteria. Finally, do not forget to check the condition of his eyes but also of his ears to avoid any infection.

Potential to play

The Border Collie needs to frolic at all times . A short walk around the block or a short outing in the yard is not enough. The ideal is to offer him a large outdoor space to allow him to give his all. Otherwise, several outings a day will make him happy. Nevertheless, he will find his full development in the work of the flock.

Famous Border Collie Dogs

Bandit : this Border Collie was adopted by the Ingalls family in the American series The Little House on the Prairie , directed by Michael London . Laura Ingalls , played by actress Melissa Gilbert , was deeply affected by the disappearance of her previous dog named Jack .
