The Belgian Shepherd Malinois remains subject to a spring moult and another in autumn. It is nevertheless easy to maintain, because its coat is short. The latter must be regularly examined and cleaned in order to preserve its protective capacity.

It is recommended to brush the dog once a week . During moulting, it is advisable to use a curry comb before brushing, in order to ensure the cleanliness of the undercoat.

The eyes are cleaned with gauze and physiological saline, and the ears with ear drops. As with all breeds, their nails should be clipped regularly if they do not wear out naturally to avoid the risk of cracking, which can cause pain. In order to preserve your teeth , it is also important to brush them . This treatment eliminates the accumulation of tartar and the proliferation of bacteria.

Physical activity

Potential to play

The Belgian Shepherd Malinois needs to stay active. Long daily outings should be offered, as well as games and ideally obstacles to overcome (forest hikes and agility courses, for example).

Unlike adults, puppies have a lower need for physical activity due to their size. Under 4 months, 15 to 20 minutes of play outside, morning and evening, are sufficient. From 4 to 6 months, the puppy, in addition to continuing to enjoy games outside, may be required to take short walks. From 6 months to a year, the duration of outdoor exercises (for example with a ball or a Frisbee) can be extended to 40 minutes. From the age of one, the Belgian Shepherd Malinois can begin to follow his master during his jogging sessions, the duration of which is to be gradually increased. Note that hard surfaces, such as asphalt and concrete, should be avoided.
