Other names: Papillon Spaniel, Phalène Spaniel, Continental Toy Spaniel
The Continental Miniature Spaniel is a robust dog despite its small size. This little spaniel is harmoniously structured, slightly longer in length than in height. Giving an impression of liveliness and grace, the Papillon Spaniel exudes great pride by its easy pace and distinguished gait. There are 2 varieties of the Continental Miniature Spaniel: the butterfly (straight ears) and the moth (floppy ears).

History of the breed
The first references to the Continental Miniature Spaniel breed date back to medieval times. It would have been produced by reducing the dimensions of the Hunting Spaniel. Its close cousin, the Phalène variety , is even older. The Papillon Spaniel seems to have been developed towards the end of the 19th century . It was particularly popular with well-to-do families and royal courts. The breed was definitively recognized by the FCI on January 1, 1954.

Physical features
His hair: long, abundant, shiny, wavy without being curly, slightly resistant and planted flat. Short across the face, muzzle, front of legs and underside of hock.
Its color: white background associated with any color. White should remain dominant all over the body except the head.
Its head: round, expressive, lighter and shorter in proportion than in large and medium spaniels. The stop is quite steep.
His ears: set back on the head, set wide apart (enough to show the roundness of the head). Carried straight, trimmed with fringes, the conch well open and turned upside down, which evokes the shape of the open wings of a butterfly.
His eyes: large, wide, almond shaped, low set and dark in color.
His body: top line neither short, nor too arched, without being flat, solid and moderately arched loins, broad and fairly deep chest, lower line slightly raised.
Its tail: long, well trimmed with fringes, set high, carried high when the dog is awake. Never rolled up or lying flat on your back.

The Continental Miniature Spaniel is characterized by its great vivacity, its extraordinary joie de vivre and its constant search for expressions of affection. Extremely attached to his master , he is an excellent companion dog who is distinguished by his gentleness and tenderness, but also by his mischievous and rather funny side . He is, moreover, quite discreet: he is not a great barker, nor good at guarding, even if certain subjects can turn out to be quite good warnings. What is sought after in the Continental Miniature Spaniel is above all its kindness and cheerfulness.

Obedient |
For this kind of dog, it is recommended to give him an education that is both firm and gentle. One can, indeed, want to spoil him, so much he knows how to use his charm and his sweetness . On the contrary, it is advisable to show him the limits early enough for him to be a very good companion, pleasant and docile. He is a dog who adapts very easily to all kinds of situations.
