History of the breed
The Russian Black Terrier descends from the Giant Schnauzer and has benefited from contributions from the Rottweiler, Airedale, Newfoundland and arguably many other breeds through selective crossbreeding. The breed was thus developed after WWII in Russia , in particular by military specialists who wanted to obtain a dog of large size, robust, versatile and able to acclimatize to different conditions.
After being classified in the Terrier family (Group 3) in the nomenclature of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, the Russian Black Terrier was then transferred to Group 2 because of its characteristics closer to those of the Schnauzer type . The definitive recognition of the Russian Black Terrier breed by the FCI was ratified on September 29, 1983.

Due to its large size, the Black Russian Terrier is not made for apartment living. He needs a large fenced garden to enjoy good freedom of movement and fully express his guard dog instinct. He predestined himself for a master who was available and capable of making himself respected. It should be watched in the presence of the youngest children who can be clumsy towards it and cause undesirable reactions.
