History of the breed

The soft-haired Irish Terrier was traditionally used by farmers to help them get rid of pests, but also to hunt badgers and otters . Its origins are very old, since they date from at least 2 centuries. However, the breed of the soft-haired Irish Terrier was not officially recognized by the Irish Kennel Club until 1937.

Physical features

His coat: soft, silky, of medium length (no more than 12.7 cm for an ungroomed dog), wavy or forming curls, without being bulky. The dog has no undercoat.
Its color: all the shades of wheat, ranging from light to golden tending towards red.
His head: well proportioned, rather long, of strong build but not coarse. The skull is flat and of moderate width, the stop marked, the nose black and well developed, the muzzle of the same length as the skull, the jaws strong and articulated in scissors or pincers, the zygomatic arches not prominent.
His ears: small to medium in size and carried forward.
His eyes: dark hazel in color, medium in size and not prominent.
Its body: of moderate length and approximately equal to the height at the withers, inscribing the dog in a square. The neck is strong and without dewlap, the back powerful and horizontal, the loins short and powerful, the chest high and the ribs well sprung.
Its tail: of moderate thickness, carried cheerfully, but not on the back.

The Soft Coated Irish Terrier is a dog that sheds very little coat because it does not have any undercoat and only experiences moderate shedding . Its maintenance is not particularly restrictive, but it must be ensured regularly to preserve the beauty of its silky and curly coat.

It is recommended to brush the dog twice a week . If it is intended to be exposed, it can be groomed and thus undergo 2 or 3 epilations per year. It can be washed , but only occasionally . It must in no case be shaved , as this would alter the texture of its dress.
