History of the breed
In all likelihood, the Griffon Nivernais has for ancestors the dogs of the Hautes-Pyrénées and the Gray Dogs of Saint-Louis , a breed that has now disappeared. It was part of the French royal packs for a long time, until François I decided to replace them with other varieties. It will then experience a significant decline, but a handful of enthusiasts from the Nivernais country will continue the breed while retaining a few representatives.
Subsequent contributions of English Foxhound, Otterhound and Griffon Vendéen operated towards the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th will bring it closer to current standards. The Griffon Nivernais club was founded in 1925. The breed was definitively recognized by the FCI on December 15, 1959.
